Bone & Musculoskeletal Cancer
Bone & Musculoskeletal Cancer
Cancers of the musculoskeletal system originate in the bones or soft tissues such as the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Bone sarcoma, soft tissue sarcoma, and metastatic carcinoma are all examples of this form of cancer. The majority of these cancers occur as a result of metastasis, i.e the spread of cancer cells from other organs such as the breast, colon, or lungs. This type of cancer is extremely rare, accounting for only around 0.2% of all cancer cases.
Symptoms of Bone & Musculoskeletal Cancer
In this form of cancer, the symptoms are not very clear as it is very rare, a proper diagnosis is necessary in this case.
Bone cancer: Pain in the affected bone, swelling near the affected bone, fractures, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss are all possible indications of bone cancer.
Soft tissue sarcoma: It may not have any early signs, but it might eventually manifest as a lump or swelling, and if it presses on a nerve or muscle, it can cause pain.
Risk factors for Bone & Musculoskeletal cancer
Cancer treatment: People who have received radiation, stem cell transplants, or certain chemotherapy medicines for other cancers are more likely to develop bone tumours.
Genetics: A small percentage of bone tumours appear to be inherited from parents. Mutations (or faults) in particular genes can give rise to conditions such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome and an eye cancer called retinoblastoma.
Other conditions: Patients suffering from Paget’s disease of bone or Multiple Enchondromatosis are at a higher risk of developing certain types of bone cancer.
Note: There is no way to avoid bone cancer right now. The best chance of successfully treating the disease is to detect it early. If you or your child has any of these risk factors, see your doctor on a frequent basis.
